Project Overview

Hindmarsh were proud to be selected by IKEA to build their first ever store in Canberra, ACT. The single storey IKEA facility spans over 7.2 hectares.

The Canberra IKEA houses 26,000 sqm of warehouse space with high bay access, along with car parking for 800 vehicles on-site in the Majura Parkway Estate.

The building was designed and built with sustainability at its core, including solar power, rainwater harvesting, insulated sandwich panel walls and roofing systems.

The facility provides more than 7,200 products, 11,200 sqm of combined furniture showrooms, market hall space and a 340 seat IKEA restaurant.

The Hindmarsh Difference

Sustainability through design

Long-term sustainability was at the heart of this project. In total 34,000 solar panels were installed on the roof to generate up to 25% of the store’s energy requirements. Moreover, stormwater systems were installed to collect and recycle rain water for use as irrigation on site.

Lighting, Cooling & Building Optimisation

The store lighting systems utilised the latest LED technology and the air conditioning system adopted newly developed technology to minimse power usage requirements. The building was designed and built to be well insulated with sandwich panel walls and roofing systems supported by optimsed structural steel framework.
