The Jeffrey Smart Building (JSB) is a ‘state-of-the-art’, Five Green Star rated building designed to enhance students’ learning experiences. The building provides a world class learning environment for up to 1,800 students on UniSA’s City West Campus.
JSB integrates smart learning spaces, innovative educational resources, student support facilities and has enabled the significant expansion of the University’s City West Library. JSB is located in the heart of the urban landscape, surrounded by university campus buildings, a hotel, a child care centre and the Adelaide Remand Centre.
As part of our commitment to quality, Hindmarsh worked with subcontractors to prepare plans which were submitted, reviewed and approved during the early stages of the project to ensure client expectations were fulfilled prior to handover.
The Hindmarsh project team worked collaboratively with the University, architects and key stakeholders to ensure the surrounding neighbours of this ‘live’ site were inconvenienced as little as possible, especially as the location chosen for the JSB was heavily contaminated.
Hindmarsh developed a detailed strategy and project specific Asbestos Management Plan to mitigate the risks to local and future generations. Furthermore, the site required Archaeological excavation in coordination with local experts to preserve any items of interest. Not only were these additional considerations successfully managed, but the Hindmarsh teams strategy resulted in a significant reduction of the sites remediation costs, without compromising the project programme.
JSB was designed with stringent acoustic and thermal insulation requirements. Hindmarsh held multiple subcontractor workshops to discuss the acoustic design and ensure specified requirements were achieved. A designated Hindmarsh team member was assigned to monitor and sign-off all wall and ceiling installations to ensure compliance and future performance.
