CANBERRA PLAYHOUSE
THEATRE, ACT

Canberra Playhouse Theatre, ACT

Project Overview

Opened in 1965, Canberra Theatre Centre was Australia’s first performing arts centre. Fast-forward to 1998 and Hindmarsh was engaged to rebuild the Playhouse to a 618 seat theatre, moving away from the older style ‘fan’ type auditorium to a more upright semi-circular drum layout.

The Playhouse design is based on Grecian and Elizabethan architectural principles offering superb sight lines from all three levels while maintaining an intimate atmosphere. The external finishes have a modern and exciting image whilst internally the semi-circular theatre has great warmth and intimacy. Hindmarsh also installed state-of-the-art theatre equipment, lighting and innovative acoustics throughout the Playhouse.
